Can BackupOnDemand run as a Service? Where are the BackupOnDemand settings stored? What is error 551212 on startup of BackupOnDemand? Do you have a list of supported CD and DVD writing drives? Does BackupOnDemand support CD/DVD spanning? Can I backup a FTP site to my local hard drive? Does BackupOnDemand support Realtime profiles to/from FTP locations? Can a Profile be setup for all users? I have two Realtime profiles monitoring the same directory, but only 1 sees the changes. Help! My backup data from different Profiles is all mixed together. How do I update or change the registration key once it has been installed? How does BackupOnDemand detect file changes?
Can BackupOnDemand run as a service? No, not at this time, the current version of BackupOnDemand requires some user interaction that make running it as a service impractical. But we are working on BackupOnDemand Pro version that will run as a background service on all currently supported platforms.
Where are the BackupOnDemand settings stored? All BackupOnDemand settings including window position/sizing, error reporting preferences and Profiles are stored in the file BODMonitor.ini. This file is located in one of two locations, depending on your operating system.
Win95/98Me BODMonitor.ini is located in your Windows directory (usually c:\windows). An example location would be c:\windows\ApplicationData\Caddais
WinNT4, W2k, XP, Win2003 There is a separate BODMonitor.ini file for each username in the computer. The file is in the Application Data directory for each user. For example for the username John, the BODMonitor.ini file is located in the C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data.
What is error 551212 on startup of BackupOnDemand? Error 551212 occurs when you are running more instances of BackupOnDemand that your Registration Key allows. In order to correct this problem you may need to purchase additional licenses to account for all the computers you plan an using BackupOnDemand with. To list the other computers that are currently running BackupOnDemand you can do the following:
- Open a DOS command prompt - Switch to the BackupOnDemand program directory - Execute the following command BODMon.exe SHOWNETUSERS
BackupOnDemand will display a dialog box that lists all of the currently running copies of BackupOnDemand.
Do you have a list of supported CD and DVD writing drives? It would be nearly impossible to list all supported DVD/CD devices, but nearly all drives manufactured in the last few years should be compatible with the built-in CD/DVD writing library. If you are having a problem with a particular device, please contact our Support staff and we can determine the compatibility of your device. Please be sure to include drive manufacturer and model numbers when contacting us.
Does BackupOnDemand support CD/DVD spanning? Yes, a backup set can span as many CD/DVDs as required. BackupOnDemand will automatically make best use of the space available on each CD/DVD as to not waste space. Once a CD has been completely filled, BackupOnDemand will prompt for the next CD/DVD to be inserted before continuing. The only limitation is that any single backed up file may not be any larger that what can fit on a empty disc (650MB for CD and over 2GB for DVD).
Can I backup a FTP site to my local hard drive? Yes, FTP locations can either be a source location or a destination location. This means you can backup your local system to a FTP location, or backup a FTP location to your local/networked drive.
Does BackupOnDemand support Realtime profiles to/from FTP locations? While BackupOnDemand is able to backup local files from a Realtime profile to a FTP location, we do not recommend it. FTP activity can be quite a bit slower than other forms of storage media. If you have a group of files that change frequently or are large in size, BackupOnDemand could fall behind while waiting for to be written to the FTP location. Conversely, we do not support Realtime backups on a FTP location, this is because we have no way to detect file changes in realtime on a remote filesystem. Instead use a Scheduled or Interval profile to automatically make backups of FTP locations at regular intervals.
I have two Realtime profiles monitoring the same directory, but only 1 sees the changes. The current version of BackupOnDemand only supports realtime monitoring of a directory by 1 Profile. But other Profile type (Scheduled, Interval, Manual) can point to directories be monitored by other profiles. You may choose to either have 1 Profile be setup to Realtime while the other profile(s) monitoring the same directory setup in other modes, or choose to set up all Profiles monitoring the same directory as non-realtime.
How come BackupOnDemand does not see changes made by other users on a mapped drive using a Realtime profile? BackupOnDemand uses a File System Filter to efficiently detect the changes made to files. This is loaded on the system where you install BackupOnDemand, and therefore can only detect changes in Realtime on the local system. You can simulate realtime profiles by using a Interval profile with a setting of 2-3 minutes. All files changed since the last interval will be detected and properly backed up.
How do I update or change the registration key once it has been installed? Once you install a Registration Key in BackupOnDemand you are no longer able to edit the key using the normal Help, Registration menu items, instead use the following procedure.
- Open a DOS command prompt - Switch to the BackupOnDemand program directory - Execute the following command BODMon.exe REGISTER
BackupOnDemand will display a dialog box that will allow you to enter your new Registration Key
Help backup data from different Profiles is all mixed together. When you specify the Archive directory for each Profile, BackupOnDemand starts it backup directory tree at this directory, therefore if you create two profiles each backing up data to the same directory, the files from each profile are all mixed up. Instead specify a subdirectory for each Profile off the main archive directory, for example c:\backups\Profile1 and c:\backups\Profile2, your data will then stay separate for each Profile.
Can a Profile be setup for all users? Not at this time, the current version of BackupOnDemand stores each users settings in a seperate location. You may manaully copy the Profile settings for one user to another users setting files. For more information on the BackupOnDemand settings file read the "Where are the BackupOnDemand settings stored?" entry.
How does BackupOnDemand detect file changes? This depends on the type of Profile, Realtime or non-Realtime
Realtime - BackupOnDemand uses a file system filter driver to see all file system activity. When a file is modified in any way that is of interest to BackupOnDemand, the BackupOnDemand Monitor application is notified and the file is stored in the archive.
Non Realtime - In these Profiles (Scheduled, Interval, Manual) when the Profile's backup task is run, BackupOnDemand compares that Date and time of each file to the date and time of each files last archived version, if they differ the file is backed up.
BackupOnDemand also has the capability to use the archive bit as a way of determining that a file has changed since the last backup occurred. If you prefer this method of changed file detection, please contact at support@caddais.com for further information about enabling this feature.
